Especially of the “Constable” variety.

Kinja'd!!!

This law enforcer illegally parked his cruiser so he is blocking the entrance to one of the largest surface parking lots in the area and the sidewalk adjacent to it. I usually use that entrance, but I watched the guy ahead of me try to make that turn and promptly curb his right-rear wheel. I decided to go around the corner and use a different entrance. When I picked up my parking stub, two other guys were there and complained about the same thing. Both of them had hit the curb trying to negotiate the turn.

The constable was “ parked” there so that he, four other cops, and two firemen could deal with a homeless guy. The homeless guy was probably sick or maybe on drugs, either way, he wasn’t much of a threat. This wasn’t an unusual situation as there are lots of homeless folks in the area and there is a county building nearby so there are a lot of cops in the area too. It’s also not unusual for the cops to block that entrance.

That entrance is important because it serves as the primary guest parking lot for the county building across the street. That means a lot of people who are coming to downtown for the first time and don’t know their way around. They don’t know there are other entrances. Mapping apps direct them to use this one.

I decided to say something.

Me: (approaches cops , stops about 10 feet away, gets the attention of the closest cop ) “Excuse me, is this your car?”

Cop: “No.”

Me: “Would you mind identifying the officer and ask him to move the car? That’s the primary entrance to the lot and t here are a lot of people who use it.”

Cop: “Can’t you see that we’re dealing with this guy?”

Me: “Yes, I can see that, but I also see four officers and two firemen, perhaps someone could take a moment to move the car. ” (the firemen were probably paramedics)

Cop: “Who do you work for?”

Me: (showing the cop my employee badge) “I work for unspecified office.”

Cop: (sarcastically) “We’ll move it as soon as we are done with this guy, sir.”

That’s when I took my leave of the situation.

To be clear, I’m just a contractor, but I do have a badge that made the constable think twice about being a total ass. No matter what, he probably did what he wanted to do anyway, but at least I gave him something to think about.

I always get the feeling that c ops that do things like this were bullies in high school and became cops so that they could continue to be bullies.

Also it amazes me how much over kill they will send to a minor even. I got pulled over for a loud exhaust on the freeway once. it was probably 11pm, and I’d been up for a day or so. My eye were probably very bloodshot, and I was a bit twitchy because I was hopped up on monster so i could drive. However I was polite and cooperative.

Next thing I new I had 3 cop cars behind me and 2 in front. The first officer came back and told me a K9 unit was going to check my car, and to keep my hands inside t he vehicle or I could loose them.

I remember seeing a cop pull someone over like this... I have never wanted to berate someone that could kill me with no repercussions more.

I can’t argue with your logic. There has to be some truth to it, at least for some of the cops. As for the number of cops that show up, I think it’s really a matter of boredom. Most of the cops around the downtown buildings are providing security for the potential jurors. Since the flood, the building that was designed for jury assembly has been shut down, so the need extra cops around to escort the jurors from the temporary jury assembly area several blocks over to the courthouse. I think the cops rotating through this duty (it seems to be different cops every week) show up early and are looking for something to do, so they harass the homeless. I’ve seen one constable block traffic during rush hour because she thought a homeless kid yelled something at her. Within a couple of minutes, two more constables showed up and, you guessed it, blocked the same entrance to the same parking lot. I was glad I was leaving the other direction.

Some fed pulled over a semi right before the most congested highway exit on the area, which is on a curve; so the truck wasn’t visible from a distance but the patrol car was.

So everyone that wanted to take the exit stopped and asked the cops “Can we take the exit” or “Is the exit open” and the cops had to answer every question (and feared for their safety because as feds, they know that if someone stops near you when you’re checking a semi; bullets might be fired)

I also asked the officer and she said “JUST TAKE THE GODDAMN EXIT ASSHOLE”

Man, I will never talk back to the police unless I absolutely have to. I’d be in fear in that situation of just being arrested for some sort of insubbordination and then end up in a jail cell for 3 days because the clerk was out of office. And I can’t even imagine how much more I would fear that if I wasn’t a white male who dressed well.

This makes my blood boil.  You talk sensibly and respectfully to a LEO yet you still run the risk of being berated or worse.

There are some advantages to being a white guy in a suit. That being said, there was a fair amount of trepidation on my part. Sometimes I just don’t know when to keep my mouth shut.

It’s usually local PD who does that. I got pulled over by Anaheim PD while driving a former Oppo’s E90 M3 and as we’re sitting there and it’s taking forever, I’m saying, “Fuck, this is taking too long, I’m definitely getting a ticket.” He finally came back and I, in fact, did not, which was shocking, but as I pulled away I found out why it took so long: there were three other officers who had shown up. I had no idea why. My guess at the time was they came to laugh at the kid who punched it in an M3 in plain view of an officer.

Whoops.

You just have to know you’re in the right. IM and other lawyer’s special kryptonite is that they know the law better than the officers they’re confronting. And I know what IM used to practice so he’s like super Super Man.

But the same logic applies to us mere mortals. If you know you’re in the right you should have the confidence to stand up to them. I do this all the time when I pass officers on the road while doing the speed limit. It drives me UP THE WALL when people see an officer and SLAM on their brakes and then refuse to pass them. If they stop me there isn’t anything they can do, and I will certainly yell at them for making a useless stop.

I would have said something too, but then called the sheriffs department and bitched and moaned afterwards. They do actually care what the public thinks of them.

I was out running and was almost hit by a local cop driving carelessly though a crosswalk. I was so pissed. He mean mugged me and sped off. I really really wish I could have made out his car number. I was so ready to call and yell at as many people as possible. It wouldn’t have made a difference, but it would have made me feel better.

I can guess  you must have never been arrested in your life. Because I sure as fuck would never engage any cop in conversation, let alone a scolding.

Well in that particular case, its easy to know that CHP seems to give no shits at all about speeding, especially if you are talking about the 101 lol. I generally just keep it under 80 to avoid trouble but there are a signficant number of people who are doing 90+ every day right past cops who dont seem to care. It is also infuriating when I see people slow down for the ocassional CHP Exploder cruising along at about 75. I mean I am not going to fly past them in the right lane doing 100 but I have no qualms passing at 77.

I think I passed CHP one time doing 78, or some stupid speed, and I got pulled over lol. But because REDACTED nothing happened, but you know who yelled at me. If that didn’t make sense text me.

But you’re right, if the officer is already speeding then I would advise you not to pass them, but pace them. But if they are going under the speed limit, then flipping pass them!

I never slow down when I see CHP on the side of the road because if I see them, it’s too late. And nine times out of ten they’re looking at their computer or their phone not actually running radar. The only time I’ve seen a CHP officer running radar is a motor and he was doing it to slow down traffic, which drives me up the god damn wall since that is more dangerous then letting people go with a natural flow.
